The American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA) is a national trade association committed to providing high quality, unprecedented business services and products to orthotic and prosthetic (O&P) professionals. AOPA, in conjunction with the Amputee Coalition of America, commissioned these podcasts to highlight the financial challenges facing amputees and the need for federal parity legislation to increase insurance coverage and access to the appropriate prostheses. Health reform is essential to ensuring that people with limb loss have access to high quality, comprehensive, affordable health care that meets their individual needs and enables them to lead healthy, functional, and independent lives. While state parity, passed in 17 states, has helped thousands afford the appropriate device, federal legislation would eliminate the remaining coverage gaps and unfair premiums. In this podcast, Tom Kirk, President and CEO of Hanger Orthopedic Group and member of the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association, interviews Mona Patel, an Amputee Coalition of America advocate from San Antonio, Texas, who was instrumental in passing parity legislation in her state.
